The Artwork: FORGOTTEN FRIENDS

Now to what everyone really wants to know about... Forgotten Friends.
Forgotten Friends first came into existance when I was in college in
South Carolina. Converse College (no relation) is a small
liberal arts school and, as such, didn't have an exceptionally huge art
department. But, what it lacked in size, it made up for in quality. I
remember, my ceramics professor, David Zacharias, had all of these
little clay creatures around the studio. I found out later that many
were kiln gods, but that is another story. Anyway, one day I decided I
wanted to make my own little creature.

The first few creations were pretty rough, but my friends seemed to
love them. They were pathetic and uplifting all in the same breath,
which gave them a certain appeal. I made a few more and I found that
each one really came to embody a different spirit and each time I
made one it brought a smile to my face.

And so it came, that throughout my Senior year, when I got stressed
or needed a break from the daily grind, I'd make a little friend. By
the time my Senior BFA Exhibition rolled around, I had over 50 of
them. I'd even started incorporating them into my other ceramic work,
including on plates, mugs and butter dishes.

After graduation, I went through a long period with little art. After
a couple years, I decided to go back to ceramics and drawing. I
started taking classes at the Worcester Art Museum and the Worcester
Center for Crafts
. I slowly reemerged myself in the arts. Then in
2007, I once again formed a small friend. Just one, but just like in
college it brought a smile to my face and I couldn't stop with just one.
And so I made more. By the end of 2007, I had 103. Each with its own
unique attitude. I started selling the Forgotten Friends at StART on the
Street
in 2007 and got a overwhelming response. I understand there are
now a few private collections out there. It makes me happy that others
find joy in the little Forgotten Friends that I love so much.

So there you have it... a little about me and a little about the Forgotten
Friends. I hope you enjoy all the creations you find here. If you are
interesting in purchasing any of the available Friends you see here, feel
free to contact me. Enjoy!
