When I was completing my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, one of the final assignments was to write an "Artist Statement." Not an easy task at any point, but especially not easy when you're worried about finals in economics, calculus, english literature, and some other three courses. But none the less, I managed it and this is what I came up with...
Art isn't a matter of how you draw, but rather what you say with your drawings. My work is not about the same lighthouse or field that my neighbor drew, nor is it about how well I can render a stack of boxes in two dimensions. My work is about issues I feel are important. It sets out to address them in a new way and hopefully by doing so it will instill new energy in resolving these issues. Although often considered dark and depressing, my imagery and use of words creates an atmosphere that is much like that of the subjects themselves. Each piece has an essence all its own and although sometimes uncomfortable, it forces you to take a deeper look into the situations depicted. Through my work I seek to change society for the better and although it is not always a pretty, picture perfect scene or the most elegant vessel in a show, the meaning within my work will last much longer than would the superficial appearance.
I don't remember exactly what I was thinking when I wrote that. College was an interesting time for me. My artwork let me express of a lot of things that I never would have dared to verbalize. And still, that artist statement is as true now as it was then. My artwork fills a part of my life that nothing else could ever take the place of. It is an area in which I am free to express anything that strikes me. I can experiment, play, take risks, and even fail. Art is my release and my way of communicating with the world.
